Some article directories have all ready started to make changes in order to gain Google’s trust back. Also, sites like ezinearticles.com are reviewing each article closely before publishing them to the site.
So I guess that if you are willing to create high quality content for article directories you might benefit from the new changes. The spammy articles are being removed and quality articles are being excepted. But to answer your question, save your good content for your blog or website and use social media to help you get the word out about your content.
To clarify. Article directories already were hit, they are not continuing to be hit. Article sites like EzineArticles.com and similar took a hit as their restrictions on content submission were not strong.
From my experience, to get traffic to your site, content creation should come first. Create a blog on your site, creating quality content for each post, and target your keywords when you do so. Then submit some articles to some popular sites. Your traffic should increase slowly, submit articles every other day, then every week.
Facebook and twitter dont seem to generate a lot of quality traffic right away, they are better used for customer relations.
